Fish and Seafood as Treatment for Arthritis
Fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that inhibit inflammation. DHA (docosahexaeonic acid) and EPA (eicosapetaenoic acid) are 2 essential omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. However, the amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in fish vary.
In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D is also found seafood and in fatty fish such as salmon, trout, tuna, and sardines. Results show that Vitamin D affects autoimmunity and decreases disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.
Consuming 3 to 4 ounces of fish twice a week is recommended. However, people with arthritis may benefit from eating more fish.
